A more loving society is not only possible, it is the one thing that will turn things around. As one turns on the news, picks up a newspaper, or a news magazine…there are many issues on the table…that can bring a lot of negativity to our attitude and ultimately to our relationships. If we internalize the “bad news” mantra…we will inevitably start to percolate negative thoughts and feelings…which in time will bubble to the surface. With so many issues one may choose to be down about…or negative in conversation or demeanor, then we all feel that negative energy…and we spread it around…it is human nature to “small talk” our way through greetings and meetings with others…or we may chat at the “water-cooler” or online with a less than positive outlook. I am inspired and encouraged by recent announcements, most recently in my monthly edition of Registered Nurse. There is an article announcing the recent new RNAO (Registered Nurses of Ontario) position statement, paving the way for respecting diversity and inclusivity. This is very much in-line with the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and there are so many groups who have been left “on-the-fringe”. There is positive movement toward more inclusion of those with physical, emotional and intellectual challenges. (in recognition that many prefer “differently-abled” then the old term “dis-abled” and they rather see services be recognized as “handi-capable” rather then handi-capped.
Others awaiting respect and inclusion has been the “visible minority” of men in nursing. I have so many stories I could share, but I will just leave it up to you to do the very easy “search” through google, Yahoo, or any other search engine…and there are plenty of stories…diverse perspectives. There is no question, life must have been challenging in the first few years when men were finally even allowed into nursing school. It was not that long ago. The hope is, we will soon approach having a voice…and a face…in terms of nursing theory and philosophy. I still remember the feeling, picking up the required text, “Nursing Theorists and their work” and there were thirty portraits, not one of them male, (30) experts perpetuating the very foundational ideologies…no value or respect for a male perspective. That was just 8 short years ago. We all should care about men’s health and men in nursing, and the growing nursing shortage.
So, I press on…under-employed…with a Master’s Degree in Nursing, eager to see if a new era is indeed upon us…
With positive warmth and acceptance,
Dave

They say that you should not write in your blog (especially if you are “coaching” others to be positive) when you are down, saddened or extremely dissappointed in yourself, the world or with what is going on around you. My family struggles many of you know…about my dad, about each of the challenges my kids face and for some, you know what I been through and you share that is what inspires you most…not my words…but my attitude of thriving, not just surviving, in the face of daunting challenges.
I do not post much of my biography…as some would think, “wow, lots of issues there”…”sure you are over them?” Much of what I would have to write could hurt some people…family, friends, co-workers…colleagues…or their families. I do not believe in “laying it all out there”, without thinking of the collateral damage. I also, am not perfect…and may dissappoint some that would otherwise need to think “high regard” or with respect that is needed to teach others (my Nursing students…but also my Kids and those I have coached…all expect a certain standard….perhaps a “Gold Standard”…and nothing less). (more…)
I like to share my ideas and what I know to be true…in the simplest of terms…such as the ABC’s of life, “connect the dots” (a collective of concepts that link together sometimes in very complex ways)…and finally…paint-by-numbers. Many concepts on philosophy have multiple layers or a number of segments…that describe “the big picture” when all concepts are spelled out (or the artwork or tapestry is completed).
For an expansion on the ABC’s of life…I am moved to talk about…CD…(which many are going to think I mean “critical discourse” as in Critical Discourse Analysis…my favourite research methodology…but not this time… (more…)
As I am reminded by students, I would be a source of their “lifelong learning”…patience will pay off. To my many patients who visit from time to time here to hear about my latest adventure or simply my take on current events…please hang in there and return soon. I did mention to many that I would be heading over to Pelee Island for some respite but also to do some filming of Yoga Video’s and some additional “video and audio interviews”. I did not get to follow through with the trip, my film crew and others who were looking forward to a “yoga retreat”…I am deeply sorry…we will shoot some clips soon (hopefully at Jackson Park in Windsor) and will commit to at least a week-end on Pelee Island…but that may have to wait until next spring. Visit Youroptimalyoga.com for the future date for that and other retreats.
I have been advised not to talk about or share about what had happened to “sabotage” my plans. I actually feel worse for others, more than myself. For my students (and for the leadership at the University…and at LHSC) I leave this one additional Power Point, one of my better one’s…it is long and detailed…but I have been thinking about victims lately…especially the children… so I leave you this on Paediatric Trauma.
This is a sampling of Power Point presentations I have made and presented in the past.
Hi, for my family and students (who represent my most regular audience in the Blogosphere), you deserve an update. I have not been able to post lately as I have been very busy (immersing myself in my orientation manuals), in preparation with a hopeful advancement as Educator at London Health Sciences Centre. As I share with my Daughter Jess, (who visited me in London recently, as we visited Story Book Gardens in the rain-Grandson Cole not minding a bit)…London is such an awesome City and LHSC being an awesome place to work…surely she and other students would like it if I could influence the securing of jobs for all of you. So far there are no fewer than 5 of my former students and many others who have identified themselves as having attended U of Windsor.
The reason I have been so patient and persistent, that LHSC (and London) would be the final destination in terms of career extension…would be obvious to all who know me well. I am slowly discovering the “landscape” of London represents both a metaphor (Fork in the Thames)…the idea that London is more like a City growing up around a Park..(rather than synthetic Parks added later from former “rail trails”)…the inspiration is almost daily. What is also obvious, is that London, will provide more than just career opportunities (hopefully for all my kids…and students too) but a place one can “grow a new attitude” about life in general.
BE well,
Dave
